In the Chronicles of Amber, the multiverse has two "poles": Amber and the Courts of Chaos. Whereas Amber is the pole of Order, the Courts of Chaos are the pole of Chaos/Destruction. The main character of the Merlin Cycle, namely Merlin, was born and raised in the Courts of Chaos.
The Courts of Chaos float above the Abyss. Suhuy taught Merlin how to summon the destructive energies of the Abyss, which Merlin later used to defeat the occultist Victor Melman.
The Courts of Chaos is the fifth book in the series Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. This book ends the original series narrated by Corwin. The next series begins with Trumps of Doom following his son, Merlin, as the protagonist.
